Former soviet air force base. After soviet collapse generally was not used for aviation activities. Vianode was the only aerodrome in Latvia with two paved runways - both were 2500m long. The second runway was located in parallel to the still existing one and was designated 08R/26L. Vainode was home to the 54th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment (54 Gv IAP), in 1967 flying some of the first Sukhoi Su-15 aircraft. These planes were upgraded to Su-27 and MiG-29 aircraft in the 1980s, and there is some evidence that MiG-23 aircraft were flown. Currently Vainode airfield is often used for drag race events. Occasional tires on the runway. This airfield is under private management and should not be used without prior permission.
