Rumbula is a former military airfield located 11 km SE of Riga city centre. The airfield had military use in the 1950s and 1960s. In the 1960s it was used as passenger airport along Spilve airport, however it served bigger aircraft than Spilve. All the passenger traffic was moved to the new Riga International Airport in 1973. Now Rumbula is mainly used for car test drives, and only about five small general aviation planes are based here. The runway is in very poor condition, there are a lot of holes in the concrete blocks. Lately the runway is also used by paraglider pilots for winch-launches and landings.
